Ο Τυρός είναι μια πανέμορφη κωμόπολη, η μισή σκαρφαλωμένη στις καταπράσινες απολήξεις του Πάρνωνα, η άλλη μισή απλωμένη στα πόδια του Μυρτώου πελάγους. Αριθμεί 1.700 περίπου κατοίκους, που μιλούν ακόμα μια από τις αρχαιότερες διαλέκτους των ελληνικών, τα Τσακώνικα. Κατοικημένη ήδη από τα προϊστορικά χρόνια, κάποιοι λένε πως πήρε το παράξενο όνομά της από τον αρχαίο ναό του Απόλλωνα Τυρίτη, κάποιοι άλλοι πως τη βάφτισαν οι Φοίνικες, σπουδαίοι έμποροι και θαλασσοπόροι από τον σημερινό Λίβανο, με το όνομα μιας από τις μεγαλύτερες και πλουσιότερες πόλεις τους. Υποστηρικτής αυτής της δεύτερης άποψης είναι και ο Στέφανος Βυζάντιος, μυστηριώδης Κωνσταντινουπολίτης για τον οποίο δεν ξέρουμε σχεδόν τίποτα πέραν του ότι έγραψε τον 6ο αιώνα μ.Χ. το πρώτο γεωγραφικό λεξικό της ανθρωπότητας, τα Εθνικά.
Είναι µια από τις πιο παλιές ναυτικές πολιτείες της ανατολικής Πελοποννήσου και οι κάτοικοι του Τυρού είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεµένοι µε τη θάλασσα και τη ναυτοσύνη, συνεχίζοντας µια µακραίωνη παράδοση.
Απλώνεται νωχελικά στην πλαγιά του βουνού και φθάνει έως τη θάλασσα, καταλήγοντας σε ένα θαυµάσιο κόλπο µε µια παραλία δύο χιλιοµέτρων πάνω στο κύµα, όπου κάνοντας τον περίπατό σου, ρουφάς το θαλασσινό αγέρι. Είναι ένα ταχέως αναπτυσσόµενο τουριστικό θέρετρο που όλο και περισσότεροι Έλληνες και Ευρωπαίοι προτιµούν για τις διακοπές τους, για να χαρούν τις καθαρές παραλίες στα 18χλµ. της ακτογραµµής.
Στο λιμάνι του Τυρού βρίσκουν καταφύγιο οι ψαρόβαρκες της περιοχής αλλά και τουριστικά σκάφη κάθε είδους. Στις αρχές του 2016 άλλαξε μορφή μετά από μια σειρά από εργασίες που εκτελέστηκαν όπως η επέκταση του μώλου, η κατασκευή παραλιακών κρηπιδωμάτων και ράμπας σκαφών αλλά και η λιθόστρωση της παραλιακής ζώνης.
